Dry Season–May to October
May marks the beginning of the Dry season, but don’t be surprised if it still rains here and there, especially at the start of the month.
During June, July, August, and September, the afternoons are typically warm, reaching around 30°C (86°F). The weather is mostly sunny and bright, with very little rain expected during these months. June tends to have the coolest nights, with temperatures dropping to about 15°C (59°F) on average.
October marks the close of the Dry season. During this time, temperatures can reach around 32°C (90°F). There might be some rain on certain days, and you’ll start to notice a rise in humidity.
The season offers tourists with splendid weather for wildlife viewing, as the dry season brings animals congregating near water sources. However, prepare for the heat. Temperatures can soar, so staying hydrated and protecting yourself from the sun with hats and sunscreen is essential. From November to April, the air gets quite humid, and it can feel really hot outside. During the day, temperatures often reach about 32°C (90°F), while at night, they drop to around 19°C (66°F). About Katavi National Park
Katavi National Park is one of the most pristine and rugged nature reserves in Tanzania. Its is located in the far remote areas of the western part of Tanzania near Lake Tanganyika in Katavi region. The park which was created in 1974, covers approximately 4,471 square kilometers (1,726 sq mi) of land area, and is encompassed by the Katuma River and the seasonal Lake Katavi as well as Lake Chada floodplains. The enormous grass landscape with thousands of buffalo and antelopes are a true highlight. In the beautiful forests and around the lakes you find many hippos, crocodiles and birds.
Katavi National Park truly a treasure when it comes to its variety of natural environment ad wildlife. It features pristine seasonal lakes and fragile rivers like the Katuma, the Kavu and the Kapapa which attracts a large number of animals such as Cape Buffaloes, Zebras, Wildebeest, Giraffes, and Elephants. In the central area of the park, known as the Katisunga plains, you can see many types of wildlife together, including roan, Topi, and sable antelopes in the same place, hartebeest, elands, and Defassa waterbuck and many other animals.

You might see large groups storks like saddle bills, open-billed and spoon bills as well as African fish eagles, Bateleurs, lilac-breasted rollers, crested barbets and paradise flycatchers to name just a few of the incredible birds that call this national park home.

If you’re coming from Mbeya, which is about 340 miles away, it’s a tough drive that can take a whole day.
Alternatively, you can also get to Katavi National Park on railway means. You can board a trail to Mpanda from Dar es salaam via Tabora then catch a public transport to Sitalike, where a game drive can be arranged. From Mpanda to Sitalike gate is only 38kms.
