With a total length of 25 kilometres and a total width of 7 kilometres, all together creating beautiful sightseeing views, Lake Bunyonyi has a depth of 44 meters and a very calm, waveless surface that makes it a perfect place for swimming. Being a water body, it experiences the smallest percentage of evaporation during the warmest days of the year. The only changes on the water surface occur when the canoes and boats cruise around for either pleasure or business. This area also has a very comfortable climate that ranges from a minimum temperature of between 18 degrees Celsius and 20 degrees Celsius. Just like many other tourist places, Lake Bunyonyi also has an interesting part in history. This is the history on how the lake was formed that many of us may find unique. According to a fantastic story that may not have evidence, Lake Bunyonyi (place of little birds) was formed by a sad lady who used to live without showers. It’s really a must-read story that some may not believe.

Lake Bunyonyi is the second deepest lake in Africa. It is also said to be a crescent-shaped lake and is about 25 km long and 7 km wide, covering about 61 square kilometers. Lake Bunyonyi sits at an altitude of 1,962 m. It is also said to be bilharzia-free. Various islands, both big and small, make this lake wonderful and unique. There are said to be more than 29 islands on Lake Bunyonyi, and the major ones include Akampene Island, Bushara Island, Kyahugye Island, Njuyera Island (also known as the punishment island), Bucuranuka/Nyombi, Nshara Island, Bwama, and many others. This island attracts various bird species. These residents (primates) include endemic bird species, making the area a special one for birding. Examples of birds to look out for include the African Harrier Hawk, Grey Crowned Crane, Yellow-headed Canary, Double-toothed Barbet, Levillant Cuckoo, Grey Kestrel, and many others. These, plus the primary attraction of Lake Bunyonyi, attractive landscapes, create delightful walks to villages and neighboring hilltop.

ATTRACTIONS AND ACTIVITIES TO DO IN LAKE BUNYONYI.

Birdlife/Bird watching: This lake home over 200 bird species, were it is considered the best spot for bird enthusiasts where they are able to spot a variety of birds including different birds, we mentioned above not forgetting the rare shoebill stork and elusive peregrine falcon.
