Day 1: Arusha to Machame route
After breakfast, you will driven by our Explore Tanzania Tours representative from Arusha to the Machame route, which is often called the Whiskey Route. From the Machame Park gate is a gentle climb up through the original montane forest, it’s an ascent of 1,200m and 5-6 hours walking. Your first day of this Kilimanjaro trekking Tanzania adventure will end with dinner and overnight at the campsite.
Day 2: Shira cave
Have breakfast and hike through fine open moorland to camp by the Shira Cave at 3,840m. There are various animal species around this place and these include the herds of eland and some occasional lions, the geological features are fascinating and the wonderful the old volcanic caldera which can be viewed during a half-hour optional walk in the afternoon. This is 840m and 4-5 hours walking. Dinner and overnight at the camp
Day 3: Barranco Valley
From Shira, climb towards the main peak Kibo, descend into the sheltered Barranco Valley for mid-way camp at 3,950m. 6 – 7 hours walking and only 110m total ascent
Day 4: Barafu hut
Hike to Karanga Valley where you take a break for lunch. After lunch hike on to Barafu Hut 4600m, having hiked a total of 7 -8 hours and ascended 650m. You have fantastic views across to Mawenzi peak from the camp
Day 5: Kibo 5900m
Today you will aim to go past Gillmans Point to reach Stella Point on the crater rim for sunrise. 40 minutes and you will be at Kibo 5900m which is the highest point. Return on the Kidia descent route.
Ascent of 1,300m and about 7 hours trek to the summit; 2,600m descent and 6 – 7 hours trek to the Rau campsite (3400m) above Kidia gate.
Day 6: Rua campsite
From Rua campsite it is a 4 -5 hours descent through the forest to Kidia gate. Return to Arusha for the night marking the end of your Explore Tanzania Tours Kilimanjaro trekking Vacation.
